Dakota stood proudly as President Barack Obama presented him with the “Medal of Honor.” At this particularly proud moment, the memories of his heroic actions must have been fresh in his mind. His actions saved many lives by allowing him to escape the troublesome Taliban and return to his homeland. We can only applaud this soldier for putting his life on the line for the good of others.

Dakota and his unit can be found in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan if we go back to September 2009. At this point, the war with the Taliban had been going on for a long time, and US forces were stationed in many key areas of Afghanistan. Dakota’s unit had set out on foot, accompanied by some soldiers from the Afghan National Army, to protect anti-Taliban elderly people in Ganjgal.

Dakota and his comrades were well aware that they would not receive air support because, given their proximity to civilians, it was simply too dangerous. The soldiers continued on their way with the help of available artillery. Upon arrival, however, the unit was ambushed by more than 100 Taliban militants on multiple sides. Intelligence had hinted at the possibility, but nowhere near this magnitude. Dakota and his unit were put in an awkward situation and had to maintain their composure.

Despite requesting artillery support, the request was denied due to the possibility of significant civilian casualties. Other air support, such as helicopters, was also under fire at another location. To put it mildly, the unit was in an uncomfortable situation. They were surrounded, and the assistance they had hoped for had vanished. To get out of this situation, it took a great tactical decision.
Response
Dakota and another marine were quick to react. Due to their isolation, four team members had no choice but to commandeer an Afghan National Army truck and drive to their desired location, despite Taliban fire. Dakota manned the machine gun, protecting his fellow soldiers while deterring the enemy militants, despite the fact that he needed to make five return trips. They were able to relieve pressure on teammates, allowing the unit to recover.

Dakota was without a doubt a hero. The determination to keep driving through live fire in order to save a fellow man can only be described as a heroic act. Twelve Afghan National Army soldiers were evacuated by him and his driver. Many of those who were evacuated were injured, but they were able to provide cover and support for other US soldiers and Afghan troops who were under Taliban attack.

Dakota went one step further after the heroics that had already occurred. Dakota eventually had to dismount his vehicle and continue on foot due to the fire and chaos. Dakota continued on foot in the direction where the cut-off soldiers were supposed to be. He prevented their capture after locating their bodies and defeating a Taliban insurgent.

So, how did Dakota end up in the situation he did? Then to be awarded the Medal of Honor? Dakota was born and raised in Columbia, Kentucky, and after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps at a recruitment station. Dakota completed his basic training after that and was well on his way to becoming a soldier.
Medals
Dakota and his coworkers deserved to be recognized, so it was only right that they did. Putting their lives on the line to help the unit despite being outmanned and without support was true heroism at its finest. Dakota and two other Marines from his team were told they would receive the Navy Cross after receiving the Medal of Honor; the second-highest award for valor a marine can receive.

Dakota was contacted by President Obama’s staff to set up a time for the President to call him and congratulate him on his bravery, as well as to inform him that his case for the Medal of Honor had been accepted. Dakota, on the other hand, had started working in construction at the time, and the Presidential staff had been told to call back later because he was busy at work. Dakota was finally able to schedule a meeting with the President, and his request for a beer with the President was granted.

A Seattle Start
Patrick was born in Philip, South Dakota, and attended an all-boys high school in Seattle, Washington, where he showed an early interest in sports. Patrick enrolled in Seattle University’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program after graduating from high school. Patrick didn’t show much aptitude for the program at first, dropping out to reenter shortly after leaving to join the military as an officer.
The Beginning
Patrick was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps after reentering the program. Patrick served for two years in West Berlin, after which he became the Motor Pool officer of a West Berlin hospital. Patrick progressed through the ranks, eventually becoming Detachment Commander and then graduating from the US Army School of Aviation. He was deployed to Vietnam shortly after a successful start to his military career.
